I was sitting in the TV room this morning about 9:30 or so when I heard a power transformer fry up somewhere nearby. A second later, we were without power. We were about to head downtown for coffee anyway, so we mounted up and rode down the street on our bikes.

I can’t tell who works here at SPSS in the Sears Tower and who’s just here delivering sandwiches. Must be nice to show up to work every day in sandals, shorts, and a short-sleeved shirt. Surely lots and lots of work must be getting done in spite of this relaxed attire? I wonder if the […]

And I don’t tell him that nearly often enough. Since Mark and I live and work in the same place, we have a LOT of together time, and it’s easy to get on each other’s nerves and take one another for granted. When he leaves, though, I realize just how much he does for our […]

Off to the Fair!
August 16th, 2008 · 2 Comments
We’re heading out here in a couple minutes for the Iowa State Fair near Des Moines, IA, in case ya didn’t know. Ava’s already told me this morning that she wants a corndog. I told her I want a lemonade shakeup. I’m told there’s something there this year called a roast beef sundae, and I’m […]

Sister Dog
August 14th, 2008 · 2 Comments
My little sister’s a real bitch–at least according to Ava. Before anyone gets the wrong idea about my feelings toward my delightful and brilliant sister (who is also my dearest friend), I will explain that Ava’s latest imaginary obsession has been to pretend that she is a puppy dog, surrounded by other naughty and rambunctious […]

From a story in today’s WSJ: For decades, the cultural battle over abortion has been about what goes on inside a woman’s womb. But more and more, the focus is shifting to what goes on inside her head. Activists on both sides are awaiting a comprehensive report reviewing two decades of published research on mental […]

We arrived just at lunch time. Ava’s in a real mood, but G.G. wants to take her down to Nordic Fest to do some face painting. We’ll see how it goes!

I downloaded the WordPress app for the iPod Touch. This is a bit slow for typing, but it’ll be nice to have along in a pinch.

Kids say the darndest things

Last night, Ava and I were lying in her new double bed, which was delivered yesterday. She said to me, “This would make a great bed for a baby butthead.” (This “butthead” word, which she did NOT learn from us, is her newest linguistic obsession, with which she daily tests our limits. We’ve been repeatedly […]

Empty

A friend of mine lost her baby yesterday. She was due to deliver him in the next week or so, and yesterday, she noticed that he had stopped moving inside of her. When she went in, the doctors couldn’t find a heartbeat, so they performed an emergency C-section. He was dead when they delivered him, […]

Is that an iTouch in your pocket . . .
July 11th, 2008 · 10 Comments
or are you just happy to see me? Last night, after I switched off the light and turned over to go to sleep, a blue glow suddenly filled our bedroom. I looked over to see that Mark had brought his iTouch to BED with him, so he could continue “messing around” with it at MIDNIGHT! […]

That line in the sand
June 30th, 2008 · 10 Comments
It keeps changing for me, but unfortunately, not for Mark. We have yet another month down the toilet (so to speak) in our efforts to have a second baby. I had a lot of terribly, desperately, pathetically high hopes riding on this month, since it was our first time on fertility medication. I was convinced […]

Moment of cuteness
June 30th, 2008 · No Comments
Ha! Fooled ya! Not the cuteness you were expecting, eh? Well, still darn cute, if you ask me. Leah and I got to have breakfast with our friend Dawn on Sunday (Gramary was with Ava at a different breakfast joint at the same time).

Maybe we’re the ones who’re out of touch? From an Entertainment Weekly interview with everyone’s favorite MILF: On Brad’s most recent gift to her (a gun-charm necklace she wore to her EW photo shoot): “Mad, our 6-year-old, draws lots of war scenarios. He’s all into war and guns. So for Mother’s Day he drew a […]

Raining, pouring
June 12th, 2008 · 8 Comments
It poured here again this morning. It’s pretty demoralizing, and I say that as someone whose morning commute went from 10 minutes to 35 this morning. It’s impossible to complain, though, when so many others are losing their homes as I type. Our friends Greg and Linda, who catered our wedding rehearsal dinner and are […]
