Moment of truth
April 9th, 2008 · 4 Comments
I’ve been tracking my MacBook as it makes its way through the repair process at Apple. Unfortunately, this amounts to a three-stage process: Computer received, Repair, Computer shipped. Not heavy on details. So I had a FedEx shipping notification hanging off my door when I got home this evening. Tomorrow I’ll know if Apple actually […]
I <3 flickr

It’s painful to watch loved ones make bad decisions. That’s how I’m feeling this morning about flickr’s decision yesterday to include videos on their site. I haven’t had much opportunity to really consider the implications of this move, but I do know that — for me — the act of looking at a photo is […]

Et tu, Apple?
March 31st, 2008 · 10 Comments
I have enough trouble in my daily life without my favorite computer company hassling me. Yesterday, the battery on my MacBook died. It looked like this.
Embarrassment of riches

Some guys just don’t know when they’ve got it good: SALEM, N.H.—Two former employees of an Apple Computer store in Salem, New Hampshire have been charged with stealing more than 300 trendy iPhones. Police say the two stole 332 phones, valued at more than $130,000, from the store at the Mall at Rockingham Park. Twenty-two-year-old […]
The long, silent morning
March 10th, 2008 · 14 Comments
We scrambled to get out the door this morning, and in the rush, I left my iPod behind. Not good. And I’d just added about 75 new tunes last night that I was looking forward to hearing. I’ll have to remember to grab it when I’m home at noon today.

Ink keeps printer companies in the black
March 4th, 2008 · 2 Comments
Yet another in the long list of reasons why I think all printers must (and most usually do, quickly) die: If you’re buying name-brand ink cartridges, which typically hold a few milliliters of ink, you’re shelling out the equivalent of between $3,000 and $5,000 per gallon. (Suddenly, spending $45 to fill your car’s gas tank […]
Here’s what I’m watching

The ATV gurus are swarming over Apple’s recent AppleTV Take 2 update like flies on a rib roast. Leah’s excited about the update because it’ll let us watch online rentals (but only if you’re using HDMI!); I just want to make sure I can update and still have my beloved network drive mounts remain intact. […]

Packet loss
February 11th, 2008 · 6 Comments
We’ve been experiencing some issues with our Mediacom phone service at the house for the last month or so. It’s frustrating to not have a functioning land line, but not as frustrating as trying to hear someone on the phone using a Motorola RAZR cell. Who designed those things?! Blech.

Microsoft said it had offered to acquire Yahoo in a proposed cash and stock deal valued at $44.6 billion. Ugh. PLEASE don’t let this go through. (Yahoo! owns Flickr, in case ya didn’t know.)
What Would Michael Landon Do?
January 22nd, 2008 · 4 Comments
Ava and I were hanging out yesterday while I put some new media on our server. At one point, I expressed some frustration at the Apple TV needing to reboot, and Ava — who was on the sofa next to me — put her hand gently on my arm, looked up at me with her […]
In passing

I wanted to take a moment to formally welcome my brother-in-law Kevin to the wonderful world of Macdom. See, his new manager at work is a Mac guy, which means, among other things, that Kevin gets a new work laptop to replace his Dell. Turns out that new work laptop is a black MacBook loaded […]

In response to all you who have silently wondered, “What if avablog were written by a handsome, tech-savvy, funny version of Mark and a brunette version of Leah?” I give you ava’s blog. Now you know. UPDATE: Oops! Looks like my four readers crashed the server. Let’s hear it for Drupal!

Cabin fever
December 3rd, 2007 · 4 Comments
Now I understand what that means, and we were only cooped up inside for six hours or so on Saturday. What a nasty day! I did, however, manage to get outside and take some pictures of all the ice. Leah likes this one and this one: One thing the bad weather was good for was […]

Fridays are supposed to be GOOD days
November 30th, 2007 · 14 Comments
It’s only 8:30, and I’ve had enough bad luck already to fill an entire day. Maybe two days. First, Ava kicked me in the face bright and early at 5:30 this morning. Rise and shine! Then I got downstairs and discovered that a DVD rip I’d started before bed had hung up and had been […]
Blogger curse
November 28th, 2007 · No Comments
Actually, it’s just my curse, I’m sure. I only ever get good (subjective, I know) ideas for posts when I’m nowhere near a computer. And it’s rare for me to be nowhere near a computer. So I end up writing posts about how I always fail to write down my good blog post ideas. Riveting. […]

Stupid dream
November 15th, 2007 · 4 Comments
I don’t know if I almost never have dreams, or if I simply never remember the dreams I have. Seems like the latter is more likely. When I do manage to remember one, it feels like a special event, even when the dream is stupid, like the one I had last night. While every other […]

Rip. Encode. Repeat.
November 12th, 2007 · 4 Comments
My MacBook was busy this weekend ripping and encoding a number of DVDs. Handbrake‘s latest version really does a nice job encoding DVD rips with 5.1 channel surround via default settings. I was able to get through Monsters Inc., Cars, The Incredibles, and two Caillou DVDs before the weekend ran out. I wish I hadn’t […]

Leah was giving Ava a bath two nights ago, and I was in the bathroom with them for a time. I stood and looked down at Ava as she splashed around in the tub, sitting sideways with her little head sticking up out of the water, and I was struck again by the fact that […]
