Baby book

My beloved SIL was, I hear, distraught when she learned we didn’t have a baby book underway for Emmett. I understand that this is a sensitive subject for Rachel, the second child, whose own baby book consists of a first page announcing her birth followed by page after blank, infuriating page of nothing. Were you to read it now without knowledge of Rachel’s current existence, you’d likely find yourself in the uncomfortable position of wondering whether she’d met some very, very untimely demise.

Of course, we all know Rachel is alive and well. And I can appreciate that she doesn’t want her fate to befall her dear nephew. But I ain’t about writing down — by hand, with pen — the day that Emmett starts clanking two blocks together. Nuh uh. [Emmet’s been clanking two blocks together for weeks — ed.]

So, here’s what Emmett’s doing now. I’m sure if I miss something L will come along and fill in the blanks:

  • Standing. His short periods of standing unsupported are getting longer all the time. Today he lowered himself from a standing position without holding on to anything. I think he could actually walk right now if he wanted to, he just doesn’t know he can.
  • Saying “mama.” I admit, it’s recognizable. And I’m OK with Emmett choosing that for his first word.
  • Teeth. His fourth — front upper left (his left)
  • Waving. He likes to stand and wave to us until we start waving at him. I think he knows what he’s doing, but it’s so difficult to tell at this age.

We took Emmett and Ava on a walk this evening. Emmett was in his stroller, and Ava was on foot. Up until recently, Em’s loved riding in his stroller, but something about today just wasn’t working for him. So I held him on my arm, and he looked around the world with a big smile on his face as the 12-degree weather burned his little cheeks rosy pink. There’s no accounting for this kid, but we sure do love him.
