What could go wrong?

Subtitle: “See you in the emergency room!”

So we stopped by my mom’s place this morning on the way to daycare, as she had a half of a rhubarb pie she was trying to get rid of. She’d baked it yesterday to share with some folks she was hosting at her house. I was happy to take it from her. She also had a small bag (maybe 3/4 lb?) of cooked shrimp — unshelled — and a little container of seafood sauce. I took that, too. I planned to share the pie with my colleagues at work, and the shrimp I would have for lunch.

True to form, I forgot about the shrimp and cocktail sauce in the 20 minutes it took us to get from our house to daycare and then to work. I remembered the pie, but the shrimp had slipped my mind so completely that I replied, “I dunno” when Leah and I were grabbing stuff from the car in the parking lot and she inquired about the contents of the white plastic bag in the back seat.

Not until I got home today at lunch did I remember what that bag held. I reached back from the driver’s seat and touched the Zip-Loc bag holding the shrimp. “Hmm,” I thought. “Still cool. Let’s eat!” And so I did, seafood sauce and all. I mean, you can’t waste shrimp, right? Who’s with me?

I feel fine so far. The shrimp and sauce tasted just fine, but I suppose there could’ve been some kind of nasty bacterial action going on in that bag that I couldn’t sense, in which case I guess I could be sleeping on the bathroom floor this evening. You have to know I’m going to keep you posted on this one….
