Chompers

Went to the dentist this morning for a cleaning and checkup. Everything’s A-OK. Not to brag, but the hygienist positively gushed about the condition of my soft tissue. I’m so proud. She’d know about it, too, because she drove her f#*king little metal hook down into my gums far enough to pull my tonsils (yes, I still have my tonsils!).

The Pat Metheny show last night at Hancher was incredible. I know I throw that word around a lot, but seeing Pat play live really does boggle the mind. He, Christian McBride, and Antonio Sanchez played for about two hours, including two encores, and finished up about 10. Scott, Kevin, and I walked downtown to have a couple beers after the show and then called it a night. I got up this morning and made Kevin breakfast before he drove back to Madison. I’m glad the show was so good last night; I would’ve felt bad if Kevin had driven six hours round trip for a crappy performance. Ava was happy to get a chance to see her Uncle Kevin for dinner last night.

We had front row tickets for the concert. There were a couple guys across the aisle who had obviously secreted some canned alcoholic beverages into the venue; they were actually headbanging to a couple of the songs. When the second encore started, one of them (an idiot in a full-length black leather coat[?]) got out his cell and started taking pictures of the stage. That’s a no no. An usher came down and (quietly) read him the riot act. Being the antiestablishment badass he is, he pulled the phone back out and clicked another shot after the usher was gone. I was impressed, and not in a good way. I couldn’t figure out what this guy hoped to gain from taking a camphone shot of the top of Pat Metheny’s head (Pat typically plays pretty hunched over, at least from the neck up, and he has a sweet ‘do that covers his face). Was this wannabe Neo part of a scavenger hunt?

As always, it’s great to see Kevin. We’re heading up to Madison next weekend for a visit. Leah mentioned yesterday that we haven’t been in Madison since we were there for a wedding in May. I love getting up there in the fall. We’re hoping to take Friday off and stop through Dubuque on the way to visit the Mississippi River Museum, which is a great facility. Then we’ll do lunch and head on up to Madtown.
