“Don’t smoke”

January 19th, 2007 · by map · No Comments

A couple days ago, Ava was sitting at the table eating when she started saying what sounded like “don’t smoke!”  We asked her where she heard it, and she said her Gramary had said it.  “Why did she say that?,” we asked.  Ava rambled on about being out on a walk, so I figured they must’ve come across a cigarette butt or something.

I had to call my mom on another matter, so while I had her on the phone, I asked about the smoking thing.  Turns out she’d said “dirt, shmirt” when Ava had stepped in a little patch of mud on their walk.  When run through the Avalator, it came out sounding an awful lot like “don’t smoke.”

Leah and I heard tell recently of a child attending daycare at another facility in town who’s dropping the F bomb at school.  It’s kinda fun to consider these little tykes wandering blind through this new forest of language, but there are obviously some dark parts of the woods they’d be better off avoiding.
