  • When we’re driving down the street and pass a construction site, you point at the excavators or skid steers or dump trucks or whatever’s there and say, “Ooh! Ooh! Ooh!” until we acknowledge you.<\/li>\n
  • When I take you outside in the morning to look at the garden, just as the sun is breaking over the top of the high school up the block, you say, “Sunny…day.”<\/li>\n
  • When your mom and I are driving home with you from daycare, you say, “Going…home.” We reply, “Is this the way home, Emmett?” And you say, “Yup.” You say “yup” a lot.<\/li>\n
  • When you’re done eating, you start to push at your tray or pull at your bib and say, “Cars. Crucks.” Which we know means you want to go play with your cars and trucks, and that you’re done eating.<\/li>\n
  • When you sense that someone is upset about something, you say, “What…happen…mama?” And your mama replies, “Nothing happened, sweetie; it’s OK.”<\/li>\n
  • When you come out the front door to discover your friend David is there, you say, “Hi, Dabid.” And then you hug each other.<\/li>\n
  • When I’m changing your diaper and you let a little fart, you look up at me with a giant grin and say, “Big…toot.”<\/li>\n
  • When your big sister goes outside without you, you stand inside and point at her through the screen door, saying, “Out…side,” until someone goes outside with you. If no one takes you, you collapse to the floor in tears.<\/li>\n
