What would Iceman say?

And this, not 20 seconds after McCain calls for increased adult literacy.

Maverick (sic): That’s right! Ice… man. I am dangerous.

Re: Cindy McCain

How does a woman get orange legs, purple hands, and an ashen face? Damn this HD coverage on PBS!

Also, is there any reason to doubt that those USMC and NAVY stick pins she was wearing contain real diamonds? Good gracious, but those are gauche.

Augusta

September 3rd, 2008 · by map · 2 Comments

Our friend Andy contacted us this evening to ask if we’d like to join him for dinner at Augusta, an eatery in nearby Oxford we’ve heard a lot about but haven’t tried. It was short notice, so we had to take Ava along. It wasn’t a relaxing meal, but it was good. What’s more, we were celebrating Andy’s birthday, so it was a good cause.

“Hockey Moms” Eat Shit

September 3rd, 2008 · by Leah · 20 Comments

I can’t stand to watch any more of Sarah Pukin’ at the RNC. One little gem: “What’s the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull? Lipstick!” *Cue Republican laugh track.*

Why in the hell does my husband, who is NOT a Republican, insist on having us watch this crap?! In order to bear witness?! Palin’s fake, folksy “I’m one of you, the working people, the Washington outsiders” schtick is making me so furious that I’d like to spit at the television. I could go on and on and on about her hypocrisy and absolute unpreparedness for a position at this level, but it will only raise my blood pressure. I must turn the channel now or lose it.

This is where I swim against the tide, again

September 3rd, 2008 · by map · 12 Comments

There’s a video making the rounds this work-short week of activist journalist (as opposed to just a plain ol’ journalist, who merely reports the news) Amy Goodman being arrested outside the RNC in St. Paul while trying to inquire about the fate of two colleagues who were injured by the police. If you haven’t watched it, please do. I’ll wait…

Fall Fun Festival

September 2nd, 2008 · by map · No Comments

Gramary and Uncle Scott took Ava to a festival at the local Catholic high school (education center; it’s more than just a high school) over the weekend. They were also joined by Scott’s friend Valerie and her daughter. A couple choice pics (not taken by me):

blue

and…

corndog

Ava carries on her great grandmother’s fondness for corn dogs. Shouldn’t all food come on a stick?

Power outage

August 31st, 2008 · by map · 2 Comments

I was sitting in the TV room this morning about 9:30 or so when I heard a power transformer fry up somewhere nearby. A second later, we were without power. We were about to head downtown for coffee anyway, so we mounted up and rode down the street on our bikes.

Old Threshers

August 31st, 2008 · by map · No Comments

Leah, Ava, and I were joined by my dad yesterday for a trip down to Mt. Pleasant to visit the Old Threshers Reunion. It was a perfect day for it. Ava was like Templeton the rat from Charlotte’s Web, running around from food stand to food stand, eating everything she could get her hands on. Heck, she even put on her rat face once or twice:

apple

You gotta know there are more pictures here.

Tears of a clown

August 27th, 2008 · by map · 4 Comments

I watched Hillary’s speech at the DNC last night on NBC. She looked pretty good in HD. I hope her words were enough to convince her supporters that this election is not about Hillary or Barack but about the country. We’ll see in November, I guess.

It’s me again

August 26th, 2008 · by map · 8 Comments

Leah’s made arrangements to have Ava’s four-year portrait taken. We go around and around about this. I say that we could save a bundle of money by letting me take the photographs, but apparently G.G. likes to have an “official” portrait taken every year, and she’s willing to pay for it. Come on, Georgie, do you really think Sears can do as well as this:

swing

We’ll see how it goes. I will, of course, keep you posted.
