This has got to be one of the coolest, drool-worthy pieces of technology I’ve seen in a long time. iPhone? What iPhone? Sure, it won’t work in my XTi, but it will work in my A620. Sheesh. This is just sweet.

Great way to start a Friday
October 26th, 2007 · 4 Comments
My pal and BIL Kevin used to work the help desk at “a large Midwestern teaching hospital” until he tested out and joined the networking team. He still has friends on the help desk, of course, and every once in a while they’ll send along a plum like this cry for help: “MY NAME IS […]

There are thousands of Apple blogs out there, and God knows I’d be only another tiny drop in the fanboy bucket were I to go on too long and too strenuously here about my appreciation for (almost) all things Apple. But Apple Computer announced the results for its most recent quarter today, and I’m struck […]

Tech on TV
October 9th, 2007 · 8 Comments
There’s really no reason why the typical portrayal of technology by television shows should be any more accurate than portrayals of, say, relationships, house renovation, or wilderness survival. Still, I always get a kick out of the funny things I see. Like last night. Thanks to our HDTV set and its internal ClearQAM tuner, we […]

Music
October 5th, 2007 · No Comments
It seems like I should make some note of the amazing changes lately in the online music world, since I enjoy music, and particularly music that I can research and buy without prying my big arse off the sofa. Amazon.com recently announced the beta of their online music download store, which offers a million or […]

Wha?
September 12th, 2007 · 4 Comments
From today’s WSJ: If it seems like you are listening to music more but enjoying it less, some people in the recording industry say they know why. They blame that iPod that you can’t live without, along with all the compressed MP3 music files you’ve loaded on it. I’m having a difficult time wrapping my […]

Variations on a theme
September 5th, 2007 · 8 Comments
I bet that line has never been used before when a blogger switches themes. I’m a font of creative verse. If you’re reading this, you’re looking at a new theme here at avablog. Leah alerted me to the fact that the “old” theme I was using wasn’t rendering on IE<7. It’s the company default, and […]

ANOTHER birthday!(?)
September 5th, 2007 · No Comments
Steve, Steve, Steve. You vile tempter. It was three years ago tomorrow that my wife gave me one of the best gifts I’ve ever received, namely, my 4th generation iPod (20GB). How many hours use have I gotten out of this thing since then? Ten thousand? It might not be much of a stretch. The […]

It’s not something I created, but I figured it was time for an overhaul. Stick with me. There’s some changes need to be made, and I’ll make them as quickly as I can. — The Management PS — The header image is a small shout out to my dear SIL, who’s in the middle of […]

Oh, and another thing
July 31st, 2007 · 4 Comments
I love to walk around like a total tourist when I’m visiting a place. And particularly cities with lots of cool architecture. I think it would be sad if you lived or worked every day somewhere like downtown Chicago and became inured to the beautiful buildings all around you. I suppose it’s inevitable to some […]

No net @home
May 20th, 2007 · 2 Comments
I’m having some difficulties arranging ‘Net access at my mom’s place, where we’ll be staying for the next month or so. This should make for an interesting social experiment if I can’t get something figured out, and fast.
The walls are closing in

I’m ordinarily pretty good at handling stress, but these last couple weeks have started getting to me. The impending move and all of its details are mostly to blame, but there have been other things going on that have contributed to my befrazzlement. One milestone that I was glad to get out of the way […]

So, I went shooting off my mouth about working up a new theme for avablog now that it’s hosted at a new site. It seems like I should update the look around here. It’s been a while. But I’ll be jiggered if there’s not a downright dearth of simple, clean WordPress themes out there. So, […]
And…we’re back
March 14th, 2007 · 6 Comments
avablog now has a new home, thanks to my friend Greg, who graciously offered me a virtual domain on his site5 account. It’s good to have friends in high places. What this means is that the blog will have a much better uptime; it won’t come down when I, say, move my server to a […]
Birthday girl
February 23rd, 2007 · 4 Comments
Today is Leah’s birthday. It turned out to be a bit of a disappointment for her. I won’t say how old she is, but I will post this nice picture I took of her cake: Anyway, we were supposed to go to Chicago to meet up with Kevin and Rachel (unbeknownst to Leah and Kevin) […]
Philly Cheesesteak Burger
February 15th, 2007 · No Comments
I’ven’t* yet ceased to be amazed (and often disturbed) by the search habits of the general WWW-using public. One example is the perennial placement of the search term “philly cheesesteak burger” among the top five terms in my httpd log. Look, I love Hardee’s as much as the next person, and I might’ve even searched […]

Killing me softly
February 7th, 2007 · No Comments
We’re in the market for a new database at work, so we’ve had vendors coming in to give three-day demos of their software. I won’t name any names, but the first group was really top notch. All of the presenters really knew their stuff, and they were polished and professional, but not aloof. Their product […]

Welcome to the 21st Century’s equivalent of the shoebox full of photos: This is an image of the widget that shows me the status of my RAID, which is where I’ve stored digital copies of every single movie and picture I’ve taken in the last three years (and some pictures from long before that). It’s […]
Photoshop maven

A maven is someone who is experienced or knowledgeable. Given the title of this post, I suppose it goes without saying that the contents of this flickr set exhibit the telltale signs of a Photoshop maven at work. Some quick background…
