Ava’s kindergarten teacher, Ms. Michelle, warned us at the beginning of the year that we’d be surprised by how quickly Ava’s reading and writing took off after a short period of hesitation (a period we took, naturally, as a sure sign of some failure on our part to instill in our daughter a love of letters).
Ms. Michelle wasn’t kidding. Lately, Ava’s really become engaged with all the words she sees, which entails reading and writing them. A great example is the lost dog poster she created yesterday. After a brief encounter with a loose Husky in our neighborhood last night, Ava came inside and sat down to create a poster she could hang on our front porch. It went a little something like this:
I love reading how she hears these words. The only word she asked for help with was “husky,” which I’m going to take as a sign of her confidence, whatever its actual psychological meaning. I’m not saying she’s a genius, I’m just glad it looks like she’s going to be able to read and write well enough to fill out a job application one day.
