Embarrassment of riches

Some guys just don’t know when they’ve got it good:

SALEM, N.H.—Two former employees of an Apple Computer store in Salem, New Hampshire have been charged with stealing more than 300 trendy iPhones.

Police say the two stole 332 phones, valued at more than $130,000, from the store at the Mall at Rockingham Park.

Twenty-two-year-old Christopher Nashed of Sandown and 28-year-old Joshua Garrard of Methuen, Massachusetts, were arrested on Wednesday.

It’s like when I was a yoot and I’d waste water or (rarely) food and my parent would say something to the effect of, “There are people in Africa who would love to have the XXX you’re wasting.” (Where XXX is whatever I was wasting.) Really, though. Three hundred and thirty-two iPhones? I can’t even understand how it’s possible if you’re stealing them from a retail store.

A guy at work recently got one of the $250 refurb models that went on sale in the last couple weeks. He snagged me in the hall and rubbed it in my face the other day, showing off all the cool but barely useful apps he had on it as a result of jailbreaking it.

In Minneapolis last weekend, Kevin and I went by an Apple certified reseller to check out the iPhone and the iTouch. As expected, they were very cool. Slightly less expected was how much work it’d take me to get used to typing on one of those screens. Because I’d anticipate typing quite a bit. Guess there’s no way to really know how much work it’d be without getting one, but then maybe all the people who returned those refurbs had big fingers….
