Good morning

The view as I walked into the office this morning:

Not bad.

I’m now carrying my XTi and both lenses with me everywhere in my little Tamrac bag. I was thinking last night about all the old photos I’ve seen taken by my grandparents and great grandparents and Leah’s relatives. Lots and lots are portraits taken on special occasions. “We have the group together; let’s take a picture!” Or, “The grandkids are here! Let’s get some pictures.” But once in a while I come across a photo (I admit, a wonderfully old, maybe slightly crinkled, ragged-on-the-corners piece of paper that I’d otherwise find distastefully quaint) without any obvious subject. Almost like a test shot. Of a farm fence terminating in the corner of a bean field, or part of a porch with a young maple nearby casting dappled shadows over its weathered floorboards. I love these pictures. They say so much more about the photographer, at least potentially. What did he find beautiful, or interesting? What was his sense of humor like? What saddened him?

I wonder what all these photos I take will say to Ava if she ever rediscovers them years from now. She’ll already know she’s the apple of my eye (and anyone who knows me knows what a special place that is 😉 ), so the thousands and thousands of pictures of her won’t come as any surprise. But what about all the other stuff? I’m excited to have this legacy to leave for her.
