April 8 - 23: Virginia

4/8 - Yorktown (START)
The journey begins...
the picture was taken from right out in front of our motel room. it's very warm here...70's at least. windy, too, & it' s supposed to continue windy tomorrow, but colder.
i arrived 2 hrs late in norfolk due to cancellation of the united flight from c.r. this morning. so i flew via twa to st.louis rather than o'hare...which didn't hurt my feelings. smooth flights, perfect weather. the fellow (one of the biker's husbands) who had said he'd pick up me & another rider (who came in at 1) stayed around to wait for me; he had called around & found out that i was on twa. then he drove the 2 of us the 30 mi to yorktown. sooooo nice of him.
we missed much of the meeting, but got enuf to get us on the road tomorrow. these adventure cycling maps are really neat. now if i can just read them well. i'm going to finish loading up my bike (pump, bag, purple cow horn....the essentials), then we're to have supper down the road at 6:30. with not quite 4 hrs of sleep last night i expect to be dozing VERY early tonight. breakfast isn't 'til 7, then we'll meet for the bike-tire dipping at 7:45, then off to colonial williamsburg & jamestown. 48.5 mi tomorrow....to hopewell, va.
the person who got my bike out of the box & put it together said it wasn't packed very well. in fact, the odometer is broken, so someone will help me put on a new one that i'll need to buy. since following the maps depends on my knowing distance between locations, i need the odometer.
Higher quality versions of the pictures from my trip are available here. If you would like copies of the original, full-size photos, feel free to e-mail my son Mark with your request. Stay tuned....
