April 8 - 23: Virginia

4/10 - Ashland (47 miles, 95.5 total)
perfect biking day for sure. light breezes (mostly), sunny, 60's or so, back roads (mostly).....& only about 47 mi total. & to make it especially perfect-- sharing a pint of ben & jerry's phish food for lunch. i heard steve telepathically telling me, "aunt mary, buy the phish food for lunch." (you know what a fisherman he is!) chocolate ice cream, marshmallow & caramel swirls, & those cute little chocolate fudge phish. YUM. my riding partner, phyllis, only eats ice cream once per year, but i was glad she agreed to share with me.
this was one of our "days on our own" for lunch. we had a good breakfast at the motel....continental & then some. jo was in the suburu today (the suburu, one of our support vehicles, is nicknamed 'little bo beep'....as in watching over the'flock' of bikers). staff folks take turns driving the suburu & bike with us the other days. the suburu carries bottles of water, energy bars, & other snacks for us to pick up when we come upon it parked along our route each day.
we saw so many dogwoods again today....& since we didn't have to fight the wind so much, we could appreciate them even more. that's me with some dogwoods in someone's yard.
patti cooked our dinner tonight....in the custom-made kitchenette in the back of the trailer that carries our luggage in the front part. that's a picture of her in the kitchen.
patti's a chef who has had her own restaurant & also travels & cooks for other outdoor adventure groups. tonight she fixed chicken piccata -- perfectly cooked boneless chicken in a light sauce with wine, garlic, & capers in it. the salad was spectacular...dark lettuces, lots of veggies, sprouts, & a dressing of olive oil, balsamic vinegar, crumbled blue cheese, & chopped pecans. this is the transamaerica trail, gourmet style. patti has a pantry in her kitchenette....full of all sorts of supplies. she shops every couple of days. she says the m&m's really go fast! as the days go by i'll send more staff pictures. we have an absolutely fantastic staff taking care of us.
that's a short report on a short & very sweet biking day. we'll hope for more & more of these.
Higher quality versions of the pictures from my trip are available here. If you would like copies of the original, full-size photos, feel free to e-mail my son Mark with your request. Stay tuned....
