Baby fever

L has it. And bad. The memories of the traumatic births of our two children have, apparently, completely faded from her mind. Tristan Davison is mostly to blame, of course; If he hadn’t come along and been so stinking cute, we wouldn’t be where we are today.

As the lone voice of reason in all this madness (don’t you ever again want to sleep your own bed without a child in it? Think how many pairs of shoes you could buy with daycare tuition, etc.) I’ve been cast as a heartless baby hater. But I don’t hate babies. I love babies! And the best babies of all are the babies I can pick up and snuggle for five minutes and then hand off to their parents as they walk out the door. And I love my own babies, for sure. I just don’t want another one. No matter how beautiful our babies turn out. To support my claim, here’s a photo of me, kissing my first-born child when she was but a wee tot:

Completely. Utterly. Irredeemably. Unabashedly! I never did anything in my life to warrant the blessings heaped on me by these two kids. Which makes them even sweeter. Like money for nothing.

So now I owe Leah not only for lowering her standards to such an unreasonable and imprudent level that she would marry me, but also for convincing me to join her in having kids. I never wanted children, not because I don’t like them, but because I liked them so much that I assumed I’d never be a good enough father to one. Let alone to two. And I’m not the greatest dad in the world, but I’m also not the worst, and I’m better than I thought I’d be.

Moments of cuteness

Emmett now seems to be entirely over his recent bout with pneumonia, and Ava’s been crazy about getting out into the piles and piles of snow that still linger after our recent storm.

I sat at the dinner table with L and the kids last night and marveled at how fortunate I am to have this family. But I only sat and marveled for a minute, until Emmett started throwing all his food and utensils on the floor (AKA, “I’m done.”), and Ava started whining about having to eat her beans. Better to have loved and lost, I suppose….
