Too young to know better

February 4th, 2011 · by map · 4 Comments

Our poor little buddy boy has had a rough week. Activities included falling down the stairs and pulling a full mug of coffee off the counter and onto his head (who knew he could reach the counter?!). There is nothing the kid won’t get into.

On top of it all, Emmett was diagnosed with pneumonia early in the week, which has caused him to cough and cough during naps and at night. The diagnosis involved the boy being strapped into a downright medieval device to have his chest X-rayed; I’m so glad I chose to be the one to go back to the X-Ray room with him. Emmett’s now on albuterol, prednisone, and azithromycin, which seems like a lot to us. We’re told, however, that pneumonia in kids Emmett’s age is not to be trifled with, so we’re on board with the doctor’s advice.

Through all this, Emmett has maintained his usual good spirits and charm. What’s more, he’s started using his “big boy” potty at bath time. This is a lot of fun. We made such an insanely big deal of Emmett’s first “go,” that now he breaks up each potty break into at least two or three sittings. He’ll squat down, pee a little, then stand up, point into the potty, and grin like a madman until we start applauding. Then repeat. I really hope there won’t be any long-term consequences of our exuberance; this toilet routine will be far less cute in, say, junior high.
