Portents

So this was a weird day. Emmett came home from the hospital, which was great and new and exciting. But two other events transpired today that got me thinking about the interconnectedness of the universe.

We were all sitting inside a couple hours after returning home when I spotted one of our neighbors walking through the yard with her dog. “Must be here to offer her congratulations,” I thought. But no. When I came to the door, our neighbor informed me that her dog had mortally wounded a baby bunny in our yard, and did I have a shovel I could bring out to dispatch the poor creature and put it out of its misery? I obliged.

Next, I was unpacking the bags we’d taken to the hospital. I grabbed my toiletry bag and unzipped the side pocket to discover my old 20GB iPod sitting snugly inside. I’d looked everywhere for this thing, including, I thought, that toiletry bag. Since I “lost” this iPod, I’ve taken that bag on a number of trips, never thinking, apparently, to explore that side pocket. What’re the odds? It’s all very strange, is all, given the day. I wonder what it all means.

  • When my son and daughter were quite young, our dog at the time unearthed a rabbit's warren and its nest of young hares. I had to euthanize the vermin in quite brutal fashion, only to have my children, and the neighboring kids and their friends spot me 'in the act.' After a little lecture, I loaded the corpses (animal, not human) into a wheelbarrow and made my way to the nearest field, Pied Piper-style, with a dozen kids trailing behind, on our way to the burial.

Now none of this has much of anything to do with interconnectedness of the universe, but your story brought my story to mind and that's good enough for me. Thanks for sharing.

If you're pondering the interconnectedness of the universe through dead bunnies and iPods it is even more obvious you have a newborn at home. Get some sleep. ;-)
