I was reading a magazine to Ava last night, and at one point, she stopped me and pointed to a word on the page. Then she started to sound out each letter. Leah walked into the room while this was going on, and with our encouragement, Ava finally read her word. It was pretty thrilling. We haven’t put much effort into getting Ava to read anything for herself, opting to read to her a lot and just figure she’ll make the leap when she’s ready. So last night felt like a good sign. I love reading to Ava, but I’m eager for the day when she can read to herself.

She can read, and spell, lots of short three-letter words already–such as “mom,” “dad,” “hat,” “cat,” “hot,” etc. However, she had not sounded out a longer (even four-letter) word by herself yet. The word she sounded out, on her own, was “feet.” We tried to praise her lots and lots. :)

Oh yeah. Feet. That’s right. Now where did I get cromulent…?

That’s amazing! Way to go Ava! Just watch out….once they learn to spell you lose the ability to spell out things you don’t want them to hear you say.

C-R-A-P, I forgot about that, Diane. She figured out I-C-E-C-R-E-A-M months ago. Also C-O-O-K-I-E. But this reading thing will remove one of the tools from our parenting arsenal. Leah and I have been like WWII windtalkers up ’til now….

At least she can read. It’ll make up for her speech defect.

So long as she doesn’t read out loud.
