Had a nice time in Chicago with Leah over the weekend. Short. Crappy weather. But she got some shopping done, and we had a pretty amazing meal Saturday night at Restaurant Naha. Here’s what I had:

The chef treated us to a sample of the Rich Winter Cauliflower Soup, caramelized cauliflower, Tuscan Kale, Wild Boar Bacon and Cracked Hazelnuts to kick things off. Then I had the Tartare of Hawaiian “Yellowfin” Tuna, Cured Arctic Char and Hard-Cooked Quail Egg with a Mosaic of Nicoise Garnishes, Aigrelette Sauce and Toasted Brioche (Leah got the other starter I wanted, and she was nice enough to share some: Salad of Organic Beets, Heritage Prairie Farm “Hoop House” Winter Greens, Shaved Spanish Montelerraina Cheese with “Beauty Heart” Radishes, “Northern Spy” Apples and Kohlrabi, Apple Cider Syrup and Honey Vinaigrette). For the main event, I went with the Whole Roasted Squab and Foie Gras, Medjool Dates, Sweet Cherries, Fennel and Crisp Potato Cake scented with Armenian Rose Petal Marmalade, Licorice Root, Bergamot and Pink Peppercorns. Jealous much? It was fantastic. Thanks to our server and friend Jude for the great evening. Also, the weekend wouldn’t have been possible at all without G.G. and Poom Poom, who paid for our room and watched Ava while we were gone. And last but certainly not least, to A.J. and Amy, our generous dinner companions, who footed the bill for what turned out to be the most expensive four-person meal I’ve ever been a party to.

Speaking of Ava, she got a new American Girl Bitty Baby out of the deal (she named her Peaches, Peachy for short), so don’t weep for her. There aren’t enough bytes on my server to hold my impressions of the American Girl store in Chicago. In summary: Whoa.

    i never got it, buddy.

actually, i was a little surprised that there wasn't a picture of at least part of the meal.

and if i ever got my hands on a picture of mark at the american girl store, i would probably put it on a coffee mug...

speaking about getting my hands on a picture... map, where's my herky?

Beats me. What did you do with it after I sent it to you?

Trust me, Nathan, jwh wanted a picture of me with the doll. It was just too rainy and windy in general to be toting the camera around, alas.

Also, it was lovely, and I do suck.

talk about 'worth a thousand words,' mark. i'd have loved to see that shot of you with doll!

and as to the menu? absolute envy from my general direction!
  • Dude....pictures of the MEAL, you dip.

And it sounds lovely. You suck, just for the record.
  • Leah
Danny, rest assured that this is our last foray into AG territory. I found it all to be more than a little disturbing. But what successful marketing they have. Wow. Just wow.
  • jwh
    what, no pictures?

    :)

No. Although, they do have a little photo stand at the AG store where all these little girls were getting their pictures taken with their dolls. I was tempted to jump in line and get my shot done with the doll we bought Ava, but I was starting to feel a little dizzy from all the perfect, smiling faces staring at me everywhere I turned.
  • The American Girl Empire has staked out a beachfront in your home? Oh, woes! The AGE completely overran my mother's house, such that she, her grown daughter, and a bunch of nieces all have dolls, stuff, etc., and the dolls regularly "do" things together, like go camping in the living room, or climb the bookshelves, or gather 'round the TV.

Of course, in our house we're starting to endure the constant barrage of Pokemon statistics, so, I guess to each gender their own.
