Moratorium

June 24th, 2008 · by map · 8 Comments

Every now and then Leah gets on this “you’re on the computer too much” kick and does something rash like suggest a ban on all home computing. The claim is that my trusty MacBook is taking me away from the family. To which I say, “Pish posh!”

But fine. I’m happy to participate, given she observes a similar ban on non-essential phone calls to her family and friends during the same period (“non-essential, in this case, includes a call to her mother to ask whether she should cover the fresh leafy greens she’s just washed before putting them in the fridge). It’s only fair.

Those of you who know Leah have probably already guessed the present status of our battle of wills: Leah’s resolve is crumbling. Even as of last night — the first night of the prohibition — she was straining against the new regulations after being caught in a secret call in the kitchen when she thought I was upstairs. Tsk tsk! We’ll see how long she can hold out. The yearning for her sister’s familiar voice in her ear will surely cause Leah to cave completely, possibly as soon as this evening. I will, of course, appraise you of any developments as they happen.

I would be happy to do this, if you’d actually engage in quality time, dear. Last night, I sat on the front porch alone, while you watched television. Not exactly “unplugged,” is it? :)

Now, you know I can’t sit in those hard chairs with my back in such a state! (More on that soon, dear readers.)

    One word: Skeeters.

Ah, the age-old battle of the sexes. How romantic, how compelling, how completely impossible. :)

Alas, I know all too well how hard it is to leave technology behind. Thankfully, my wife checks her email when she gets up in the middle of the night, too, so we rarely have to worry about this particular issue. We just argue about how often I can go out and pursue other hobbies in lieu of staying home.

Ain’t nothing gender-related about it. I would be very, very grumpy if Denny suggested a ban on screen time. The only thing I don’t like him to do because it takes away from family time is yard work.

I seriously don’t care whether the lawn gets mowed or not.
