I think printing sometimes is necessary -- government records, receipts of important transactions, and pictures/diagrams. Sometimes I print code because reading it on deadtree is so much better for my head than on the screen when I need to really review it. We have three printers we use at home -- an HP4 laser for code and things, a crappy HP-whatever throwaway for various junk crap, and a nice Epson color for my wife's scrapbooking, printing on CDs, etc. That one is the best, and the ink is $1.20/cartridge (6 colors) on eBay so it's not too bad to refill.

Otherwise, I completely agree about the racket part, and there's far better things to spend money on.
