Keep the dream alive

I’m sitting here eating breakfast with Ava, and she said, “Do you know who came to school yesterday?”

I knew, but I acted like I was guessing when I said, “Santa Claus?” She nodded. I asked if he was alone, or if Rudolph came with him. She replied, “He was alone. Santa drives a minivan, so Rudolph didn’t need to come along.”

A minivan? Oh god. You’ve got a baby soccer mom on your hands. Turn away from the Dark Side, Ava!

Me, I’m just dying to know what the make and model was, and if it was at least red.

Which dream is this? That she’ll get a minivan someday? Because I want one. Bad. The space! The gadgetry! It is an inevitability in our life, and I have been converted (by a free-upgrade rental minivan we got last summer).

No, no, silly. The dream that there really IS a Santa, despite the fact that he rolls up to daycare in a minivan in the middle of the day a week before Christmas.
