Christmas omen

December 4th, 2007 · by map · 10 Comments

I received a CD in the mail yesterday that was to be a gift for a family member. I ordered it used through a reseller at Amazon; I don’t see much point in buying new CDs anymore, since they’re just going to get ripped within 90 minutes of hitting my door. But I digress.

I opened the disc’s packaging to discover I’d been sent the wrong CD. Luckily, the disc in the case is one I wouldn’t mind having. I’ve contacted the seller and let them know about the mixup. It’s been 24 hours, and I haven’t heard anything back. So, if it were you, how long would you wait before going on Amazon and leaving this guy some negative feedback? Maybe you would’ve done it already…?

UPDATE: I sent another e-mail to the seller after not hearing anything back by noon today. Still no response.

I would give them 48 hours. I know it’s hard to believe, but some of us do go more than a few hours with access to a computer. :) Once in a while, I miss a whole day. To be fair, assume that the guy is just a bit busy.

Also, maybe you should attempt a second contact before you leave negative feedback. Usually they are quite willing to fix problems to avoid those negatives. If he does contact you and gladly corrects the situation but it takes him a day and a half, is that a negative experience?

Hmm. Well, I think the window for filing negative feedback should only be as large as was the window for taking my money on the front end. Seem fair? Anyone who’s reselling CDs on Amazon — and particularly anyone who can process my order and ship it in 24 hours — should be able to respond to a customer’s e-mail in the same time frame.

That said, it’s nice to see you overcome by the generosity of the Christmas spirit, Annette. Perhaps there’s hope for the world yet. ;)

Yea,you have to cut him a bit of a break, you never know–ice storm, family emergency, funeral, car trouble, left the country…the possibilities are endless. That being said if he doesn’t fix the situation you can be sure to rip him a new one with your negative feedback.

If this were a disc for me and not a present, I’d probably let the whole thing slide. But who knows how long it’s going to take this seller to 1) get back to me, 2) find the disc I want, if he even has it, and 3) ship that replacement disc out. Christmas is coming, people! I still have wrapping to do!

I would give a break … BUT, that being said, I’ve had some dodgy Ebay experiences with sellers. I was sent an incorrect item, waited three weeks (sending an email per week) and eventually opened a dispute. Then the seller blatantly LIED about communication, saying that I had been offered all these things and was just being silly.

GRR. I would leave it a week, sending an email per day. Anything over a week is too much, especially with holidays. Besides, if it really is a true emergency going on at the other end, I’m sure that person will understand why you did what you had to do.

    [gets off soapbox.]
